Most of the route from Whitehaven to Maryport can be enjoyed on a car-free cycleway provided by Sustrans.
The whole Cumbrian coast is a proposed cycleway, and already the northern section is part of the National Cycle Network (route 72) known as the Hadrian’s Wall route.
