Cumbria is reknown for its walking and climbing in the Lake District. The coastal strip and western fringes of the Lake District contain some of the quietest areas for beach or hill walking.
Cycling
There are several long distance cycling routes which pass through the area. The C2C starts at St Bees, and often begins with the train journey from Carlisle looking at wind turbines as you pass by. The Hadrian's Wall route is being extended down as far as Ravenglass and will involve good views of many of the wind turbines mentioned on this website. See www.sustrans.org.uk for more details of these and other routes.
Armed with a Day Ranger ticket (There are places for two bicycles on Northern trains down the Cumbrian coast) you can hop on and off the train and visit as many of the wind turbines as you can. See www.northernrail.org for train times and ticket details.
Visitor Attractions
There are no green visitor attractions accredited through the Green Tourism Business Scheme in this area, and we are not aware of any with serious green credentials. If you know of something we've missed, please get in touch. We will make additions to the site when we upgrade in the future.
The Wave, Maryport
This new-build visitor attraction and facility for local people will open in early summer and will have its own ‚'Quiet Revolution' wind turbine to provide some of its electricity needs. (Commercial confidentiality prevents us knowing what percentage of its total needs will be met) The wind turbine is a departure from the traditional three-blade type, and looks more like an inverted egg-whisk. It was designed for urban environment where the quality of the wind is less uniform. See www.quietrevolution.co.uk for more details of the wind turbine.
There will be a heritage exhibition including details of Maryport's relationship with the sea, a performance space, shop and cafe.
Food Safaris
Annette Gibbons, local cook, food writer and broadcaster, organises tailor made food tours in her people carrier which runs on Liquid Petroleum Gas. She takes groups to visit local food producers, see them at work and sample their goods. There is a choice of high quality artisan food producers from around the County, many of whom open to the public solely for Annette's groups.
She also runs organic cookery courses from her home at Mawbray. Contact Annette through her website www.cumbriaonaplate.co.uk
